We are a community group supporting immigrants and refugees as they begin a new life in St. Louis. We offer emotional and social support primarily by partnering volunteers with new families, specifically working with Syrian immigrants and refugees living at the Hodiamont Apartments.
- Readers: We need volunteers to read to children of immigrant families. Many of the parents do not know English very well and we want to make sure that the young children get a strong foundation to excel moving forward.
- Tutors: We need help with tutors for the children of our immigrant "New American" families in St. Louis. Most of our requests from families have been for math tutors but it could be any subject.
- Serving Meals: At a Supper Club event, a meal is prepared by our refugee neighbor. Supper Club guests have the opportunity to try traditional food from the cook’s country of origin and will have an opportunity to hear the cook’s story. Proceeds from the Supper Club event directly benefit the refugee cooks. We need volunteers at Supper Club events to set up, help prepare food, serve food, and clean up. The days/times change each month because it depends on when a person/organization schedules a Supper Club event.
Remote Opportunity: ESL Teacher. We are looking for virtual ESL teachers to teach refugee women. We are looking for teachers for students who speak only a little English or no English at all. Teachers should also spend one hour in-person with their student a week.
